COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Anselm College field hockey team captured a 2-0 victory over the host Purple Knights from Saint Michael's College on Wednesday.
Saint Anselm improves to 4-3 overall on the season and to 2-1 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Saint Michael's (1-6, 1-2 NE10) loses to the Hawks for the second time in 2018. The Hawks host Southern Connecticut State this Saturday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. in their annual Play 4 A Cure game.
The Hawks posted the game's first three shots before sophomore Ericka Meissner (East Falmouth, Mass.) scored her first career goal at 17:37. Meissner was able to tap in a pass from senior Abby Walker (Scarborough, Maine) in what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Freshman Carly LaCasse (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) added insurance less than 10 minutes into the second half, redirecting a pass from sophomore Kendall Clifford (South Easton, Mass.) to put the visitors ahead by two goals. The Hawks maintained offensive pressure throughout the game, outshooting the Purple Knights by a 14-7 margin while collecting 10 of the game's 16 penalty corners.
The Hawks only allowed two first-half shots, building a 9-2 advantage through the first 35 minutes of action and had six of the first half's seven penalty corners to their credit.
Sophomore Julia Hand (Reading, Mass.) faced only two shots on net, earning the shutout. Anna Hurley yielded two goals on seven shots against.
