MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College field hockey team celebrated Senior Day with a 6-0 shutout over the University of New Haven on Saturday at Grappone Stadium.
The Hawks improve to 9-5 overall on the season, picking up their sixth victory in nine Northeast-10 Conference fixtures to date. New Haven drops to 2-12 overall and to 1-9 against league opponents. Saint Anselm hosts Adelphi on Friday, Nov. 2 in a rare 1 p.m. start time.
Saint Anselm scored 44 seconds into the contest and never looked back as senior Abby Walker (Scarborough, Maine) poked home a left-to-right cross from junior Hannah Friend (North Easton, Mass.). With six minutes elapsed in the contest, junior Michelle Lemelin (Chelsea, Maine) increased her team's lead to two goals off an assist from Friend, tapping home a pass inside the right post.
Sophomore Hannah Potter (Harwichport, Mass.) would add a goal with 1:11 left in the first half to elevate the Hawks to a commanding 3-0 lead heading into halftime. The Hawks fired 11 of the first half's 13 shots and had all of the stanza's five penalty corners.
Friend, Walker and junior Mary Nee (Canton, Mass.) each added second-half tallies as the Hawks fired 18 of the game's 21 second half shots. Lemelin picked up an assist on Walker's second strike of the contest while Friend finished the game in sole possession of fourth place on the all-time career points list for Saint Anselm with 59 (22-15=59).
Senior Sarah Bentley (Acton, Mass.) celebrated Senior Day with a one-save shutout. Natalie Shaker yielded six goals on 18 shots, making 12 saves.
