SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Darren Clough, a 1996 graduate of Saint Anselm College and a four-year standout on the Hawks men's basketball team, was selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Hall of Fame. The announcement was made on Monday at the conference's year-end banquet.
Clough joins an exclusive group from Saint Anselm in the league's Hall of Fame. Chris Madigan '90 of the Hawks men's basketball team was inducted in 2016 and long-time Saint Anselm coaches Donna Guimont and Ed Cannon were inducted in 2007 and 2008, respectively.
Inducted into the Saint Anselm Athletics Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, Clough left Saint Anselm as the men's basketball team's third all-time leading scorer with 1,760 points, averaging 15.6 points per game. He also hauled in 781 career rebounds, currently ranking ninth on the all-time list, and was twice named the College's overall Student-Athlete of the Year (1995, 1996).
"Darren was an absolutely great all-around player on some of the best teams in Saint Anselm history," remarked Head Coach Keith Dickson, who heads into his 34th season at the helm of the men's basketball program. "He certainly belongs with the other all time Northeast-10 legends."
The league's Player of the Year in 1996, Clough was a National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II All-America pick that same season and began his career with Rookie of the Year awards from both the Northeast-10 and the ECAC in 1993. He was a two-time First Team All-Conference selection (1994-95, 1995-96).
"He was not only an extremely talented player but also just a fierce competitor and a terrific teammate," concluded Dickson. "Personal accolades were never very important to Darren but it's nice to see him recognized by the Northeast-10 for his accomplishments."
Clough and the Hawks posted a 92-29 record between 1992-93 and 1995-96 and would serve as a captain of the historic 1995-96 squad that finished with a 28-3 overall record and a perfect 16-0 record in NE10 contests. The team's perfect record in league play remains unmatched in team annals.
As a senior, Clough scored 19.5 points per contest and shot just shy of 59% from the floor (222-for-377). He was named the Most Valuable Player of the NE10 Championship as a senior, scoring 17 points and pulling down nine rebounds in an 80-65 win over American Int'l. Heading into the 2019-20 men's basketball season, Clough's 1,760 career points stand as the seventh-best mark in team history.
In his career, he was a two-time recipient of NABC East Region, Daktronics East Region and All-ECAC Division II honors (1994-95, 1995-96) and capped his career as the ECAC North and New England Basketball Coaches' Association Player of the Year in 1996. His strong performance in the NCAA Division II East Regionals in 1996 earned him a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Clough remains an active and generous supporter of Saint Anselm athletics, regularly attending the Hall of Fame banquets since their revival in 2016. The Saint Anselm Department of Athletics and the men's basketball team will recognize Clough in an on-campus ceremony during the upcoming season.
