Boston, Mass. (February 7)-The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team defeated the Beacons of UMass Boston 4-1 on Saturday afternoon in ECAC East action. The win improves the Hawks to 7-11-1 overall, while the loss drops the Beacons to 7-12-2 on the season.
Saint Anselm hit the scoreboard only 1:18 into the first period off a goal from senior forward Matthew Lowe (Stoughton, Mass.) off assists from John Penny (Andover, Mass.) and Nick Rossi (Smithtown, N.Y.) to put the Hawks up 1-0. With just over five minutes remaining, Ryan Butler (Arlington, Mass.) would score the eventual game winner off assists from Penny and Rossi again, to give Saint Anselm a 2-0 lead. With less than a minute and a half left in the first, UMass defenseman Brian Marks (Brownville, N.Y.) put the Beacons on the scoreboard to make it 2-1 going into the second period.
After that it was all Hawks as Coleman Noonan (Norfolk, Mass.) would net a goal in the second and third period for the 4-1 Saint Anselm victory.
In between the pipes for the Hawks was goalie Kevin Fairweather (Woburn, Mass.) who picked up his first collegiate win by making 31 saves in his first career game. Beacon goalie Ryan Donovan (Rexford, N.J.) stopped 29 shots in the losing effort.
The Hawks hit the ice again against cross-town NE-10 rival Southern New Hampshire University at 7 p.m. at the Ice Den.
