SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Despite goals by forward Johnny Daniels (Andover, Mass.) and defenseman Ryan Holley (Bethany Beach, Del.), the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team played the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College to a 2-2 overtime draw Friday evening at Cairns Arena. With the tie, both the Hawks overall and ECAC Men's East records stand at 2-2-1. The Purple Knights exit play this evening with a 1-2-1 overall and a 1-1-1 conference record. The game also marked the first Northeast-10 Conference battle for the Hawks.
Daniels opened the game's scoring with his first collegiate goal at 17:09 of the second period, knocking home a feed from defenseman Alex Pascal (Blue Bell, Pa.). Exiting the first period with a lead, Saint Michael's countered with a goal at 5:35 of the third period as Ryan Arsenault potted his first career goal off assists from Rich Rodeschini and Michael Jangro.
Holley scored his first goal of the season at 8:43 of the third period, temporarily elevating the Hawks to a 2-1 lead near the midpoint of the final stanza of regulation. Jangro, however, would answer with his first goal of the season at 16:42 of the third period to force extra time. The Hawks out-shot the Purple Knights by a 6-0 margin in overtime but were unable to capitalize on their offensive opportunities.
Saint Anselm goaltender Nick Dries (Commerce Township, Mich.) earned a tie in his first collegiate start, turning aside 13-of-15 shots on net. Mike Dizgun also collected his first tie of the season, halting 44-of-46 shots on goal.
Saint Anselm was 0-for-3 on the power play. Saint Michael's was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
