MANSFIELD, Mass. – Freshman goaltender Shane Joyce (Pembroke, Mass.) was named Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week, the league announced Tuesday, after a pair of strong performances in goal over the weekend.
Despite taking both losing decisions, Joyce had a career weekend against two of the top-ranked teams in the country. On Friday, he matched a career-high with 36 saves in the Hawks' 5-4 loss to No. 11 UMass-Boston Friday night, then added a 32-save performance against No. 6 Babson Saturday afternoon. Those outputs were the fifth and sixth times he has eclipsed the 30-save plateau, respectively.
It is the third week Joyce was honored by the Northeast-10 Conference, as he was named the league's Goaltender of the Week on Jan. 13. He was also named to both Goaltender and Rookie of the Week honors back on Dec. 16, earlier this season. Freshman Ryan Peterson (Brockton, Mass.) is the only other Rookie award-winner for Saint Anselm, having been named to that distinction back on Nov. 18.
Saint Anselm will return to Sullivan Arena Friday to host Castleton College in another ECAC East matchup, then welcome the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore for a Saturday afternoon showdown. Paired with the women's home game against Holy Cross on Saturday, the host Hawks will don pink colored uniforms for the annual Pink in the Rink games for breast cancer awareness.
