Daniels, Agliato Clutch on Senior Day; Men's Hockey Holds Off Huskies, 2-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior forward Johnny Daniels (Andover, Mass.) opened the game with short-handed goal in the second period and senior forward Joey Agliato (Hauppauge, N.Y.)  stuffed home the game-winner midway through the third as the Saint Anselm men's hockey team staved off Southern Maine, 2-1, on Senior Night Friday at Sullivan Arena.

The win improves Saint Anselm to 9-12-3 overall and 7-8-2 in ECAC East play and pushes its unbeaten streak to four straight games. Southern Maine falls to 5-18 overall and 2-14 in league action.

Saint Anselm dominated play through the first period, outshooting the Huskies 17-6 over the opening 20 minutes, but the score remained locked in a scoreless tie.

After coinciding roughing penalties took out a skater on each side, Southern Maine went on a 4-on-3 power play after a Saint Anselm interference call just 15 seconds later. That's when Daniels intercepted a USM pass near the blue line and streaked up the left side of the ice sheet. With an unassisted wrister just inside the left faceoff circle, he put the host Hawks up 1-0.

While Saint Anselm successfully killed the remainder of that penalty, the Huskies would respond on its next man-up opportunity with a driving shot from the right side that weaved its way through traffic at the 8:02 mark of the second period.

The teams would carry the 1-1 tie through the rest of the second period and for much of the third, before Agliato found the puck off the left of the crease on a beautiful crossing pass from junior Bryan Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.). Sophomore Brendon Kerrigan (Boston, Mass.) initiated the play, picking up his seventh assist on the year.

Agliato's game-winner was his second straight on a Saint Anselm Senior Day, having tallied last season's late goal in a 2-1 win over Norwich.

Freshman goaltender Shane Joyce picked up the win in goal, improving to 9-8-3 in his season starts. He also picked up 16 saves on 17 shots, while Southern Maine goaltender Kyle Shapiro stopped 43 Saint Anselm shots.

The six-member Saint Anselm men's hockey senior class was recognized prior to Friday's game as Daniels, Agliato, forward Sean Jenkins (Boston, Mass.), forward Kody Grondin (Hampton, N.H.), forward Ryan Donovan (Bridgewater, Mass.) and defenseman Matt Buckley (Canton, Mass.) were introduced with their families in attendance.

Saint Anselm will return to the Sullivan for its final home game of the regular season Saturday, hosting the University of New England in a 4 p.m. start. It will be the second of a Hawk Hockey double-header with the women's team taking on Holy Cross at 1 p.m. There will also be a hockey celebration at which alumni from both programs will be recognized throughout the scheduled double-header. Additionally, the first 300 students to Sullivan Arena will receive a free t-shirt.
