Men's hockey downed 4-0 at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Skidmore scored twice in the first period and twice in the third to blank the Saint Anselm College men's hockey team 4-0 in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) game on Saturday afternoon at Saratoga City Rink.

Four different players scored in the win for Skidmore (2-1-0, 2-0-0 NEHC), which also got a 28-save shutout from goaltender Brandon Kasel. Saint Anselm (0-2-0, 0-2-0 NEHC) outshot the Thoroughbreds 28-22 in the game but could not find a way past Kasel.

Matt Wolf opened the scoring for Skidmore at 7:09 of the first period, before Andrew Popp doubled the hosts' lead at 16:56. The Hawks took 11 shots in the opening frame, compared to five for the Thoroughbreds, but trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes.

Saint Anselm held a 10-6 advantage in shots in the second period but neither team was able to find a goal. In the third, the Thoroughbreds got a goal from Matt Bernot at 6:26 and one from Jack Barton at 17:24 to complete the scoring.

Jeremy Carignan and Vin D'Amato each had four shots for the Hawks. Colin Soucy made three saves in the first period and took the loss, before Shane Joyce stopped 15 shots over the final two periods.

Saint Anselm was unable to convert on four power-play opportunities but held Skidmore off the board on its two chances with the extra man.

Next up for the Hawks is a non-conference game at Salem State on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.
