NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Reigning NCAA Division III national champion Norwich University scored four times over the final two periods to defeat the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team, 4-0, in an exhibition game on Sunday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.
Kevin Salvucci scored a pair of goals, while David Robertson and Felix Brassard each recorded a goal and an assist for Norwich. Brenden Cain played all 60 minutes in net for Saint Anselm, tallying 25 saves.
The Hawks peppered Braeden Ostepchuk early, drawing four saves from the Cadets' goaltender in the opening five minutes of the first period. Ostepchuk made seven saves in the opening 20 minutes for Norwich, while Cain kept the Cadets off the board with 10 stops for Saint Anselm.
After the scoreless opening period, Brassard opened the scoring for Norwich at 6:53 of the second period off an assist by Jordan Hall. Saint Anselm had two chances on the power play in the final 10 minutes of the second, but could not find a tying goal.
Norwich pulled away in the third period, scoring twice in the first 7:25 as part of a three-goal final 20 minutes. Salvucci scored his first of the game at 5:42 before Robertson made it a 3-0 game a minute and a half later. Salvucci capped the scoring at 16:35 of the third from Robertson and Coby Downs, who had two assists for the Cadets.
Ostepchuk stopped all 14 shots he faced over the first two periods to combine with Tom Aubrun for the shutout. Aubrun made eight saves in the third period. Norwich narrowly outshot Saint Anselm in each period, with the shot count finishing 29-22 for the game. Liam O'Sullivan and Jon Pallotta each had three shots for the Hawks.
Saint Anselm officially opens its 2017-18 season against Bryn Athyn College on Friday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
