WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore forward Mike Ferraro scored twice, but Assumption College scored four times in the third period to defeat the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team, 5-2, in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday evening at Buffone Arena.
Ferraro's two goals brought his team-leading total to six this season for Saint Anselm (4-5-0, 1-2-0 NE10). Assumption (4-5-1, 1-2-1 NE10) broke open a 1-1 tie with three goals in the first 6:02 of the third period and was led by Cam Laughlin with two goals and one assist. Saint Anselm outshot Assumption by a 34-32 margin in the game, but reigning NE10 Goaltender of the Week David Zulauf made 32 saves for the Greyhounds to pick up the victory.
The Hawks nearly opened the scoring midway through the first period when junior Jeremy Carignan rang a shot off the pipe at 8:53. Saint Anselm had a pair of power plays in the final seven minutes of the period, but could not find a way past Zulauf early on, as the Assumption netminder made nine saves in the first 20 minutes to keep the game scoreless.
After the scoreless first period, the Hawks and Greyhounds traded goals 1:35 apart in the second. Ferraro tallied his first of the game at 3:02 to put the Hawks on top, with junior Kevin Curley earning his first-career point with an assist. The lead would last just 95 seconds, however, as Tommy Mahoney pulled Assumption level at 4:37 from Brian Farrell and Laughlin to send the game to the third even at 1-1.
Matt Damelio started the flurry of early goals in the third for Assumption, scoring at 1:02 to give the hosts their first lead of the night. Laughlin made it 3-1 with a short-handed goal at 4:17 before scoring again at 6:02 to give the Greyhounds a three-goal advantage.
The score remained 4-1 until Ferraro grabbed his second of the night unassisted at 17:16 of the third. A pair of late Assumption penalties gave the Hawks hopes of a comeback before Damelio scored a short-handed, empty-net goal with 35 seconds left to cap the scoring.
Farrell had three assists in the game for Assumption, while Dante Tomassini had two. Mahoney recorded a goal and an assist to give five Greyhounds multi-point nights. Soucy totaled 27 saves in his second start of the season for the Hawks.
Saint Anselm continues NE10 play on Friday, Dec. 1 when Franklin Pierce University visits Sullivan Arena for a 7 p.m. start.
