MANCHESTER, N.H. – Visiting Assumption College scored five times in the opening period and went on to defeat the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team 7-3 in Northeast-10 Conference play to end the Hawks' four-game NE10 winning streak on Saturday at Sullivan Arena.
Tommy Mahoney led the way for Assumption (8-8-2, 4-5-1 NE10) by scoring a hat trick, while Cam Laughlin tallied two goals and an assist for the visitors, who scored three times in the final 3:23 of the first to lead 5-1 after one. Senior Jon Pallotta scored twice for Saint Anselm (8-8-1, 5-3-0 NE10), which closed a 6-1 deficit to 6-3 midway through the third but was unable to get any closer.
Assumption grabbed a 2-0 lead before the midpoint of the first period as Mahoney and Mike Sorenti scored 3:06 apart early on. Saint Anselm got on the board to make it a 2-1 game at 12:55 of the first on Pallotta's first goal of the game. The senior intercepted a clearing attempt along the left boards and beat David Zulauf on the short side in the top corner from the bottom of the left circle for an unassisted goal.
The Greyhounds tacked on three unassisted goals of their own in the space of 3:02 in the final 3:23 of the first to take a commanding 5-1 lead into the first intermission. Mahoney got his second of the period before Laughlin and John Chamberlain scored goals of their own to give Assumption a four-goal cushion.
The Hawks peppered Zulauf with 17 shots in the second period but could not find a second goal. The score stayed 5-1 until Mahoney completed his hat trick at 2:11 of the third on the power play. Trailing 6-1, Saint Anselm closed the gap to 6-3 with 11:13 remaining as Pallotta and junior Jeremy Carignan scored 5:15 apart.
After coming out of the penalty box, junior Bryan Green got possession of the puck on the right boards and backhanded the puck across ice to senior Nick Gorski, who threw the puck at the net from a sharp angle on the left for Pallotta to tip in in front. Carignan tallied his third goal of the year at 8:47, controlling the puck on the left wing before deking his way to the net and scoring on the backhand to cut the Assumption lead to 6-3.
Assumption killed off a power-play chance for Saint Anselm inside the final 10 minutes before Laughlin added his second of the night at 14:33 to finish off the scoring. Zulauf finished with 31 saves to pick up his fourth victory of the season. Junior Colin Soucy made 11 stops for the Hawks in relief of senior Shane Joyce, who took the loss to fall to 6-5-0.
The game brought a close to Saint Anselm's eighth annual Pink In The Rink Weekend. The Hawks also held their 40th annual Alumni Game in the morning.
The Hawks continue NE10 play against Stonehill at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30 after a 10-day layoff between games.
