MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore forward Mike Ferraro recorded his fifth multi-goal game of the season to send the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team to a 3-1 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Stonehill College on Tuesday evening at Sullivan Arena.
Stonehill (5-13-2, 3-6-1 NE10) led 1-0 past the midway point of the second period, but Ferraro scored goals 1:21 apart as part of a three-goal flurry for Saint Anselm (9-8-1, 6-3-0 NE10) late in the second. The win completed a three-game regular season sweep of the Skyhawks for the Hawks, who have won 12 of their last 14 home games against NE10 opposition dating back to the start of the 2015-16 season.
The Skyhawks took an early 1-0 advantage on Nick Schofield's third goal of the season at 5:49 of the opening period. Connor Tedesco shoveled the puck up ice to Ryan Meade, who collected the puck at center ice and fired a shot from the top of the right circle. Junior Colin Soucy was equal to the first shot, but Schofield was on hand to scoop in the rebound for the visitors.
Stonehill nursed its slender advantage until Saint Anselm scored three goals in 3:58 late in the second to seize control. Ferraro, who entered the game with eight goals in eight NE10 games his season, grabbed his team's first two goals to bring his NE10-leading total to 14 this season. His 14 goals match Mark Meads' total from 2015-16 as the most by a Saint Anselm skater since 2012-13 (Mike Richard – 20).
At 11:35 of the second, Ferraro evened the game at 1-1 with his first of the night. Junior Kevin Curley found freshman Alec Andreucci with a stretch pass up the right side and Andreucci backhanded the puck to Ferraro, who fired a wrist shot in over the glove of Billy Palmer and into the top-right corner.
Less than 90 seconds later, Ferraro put the Hawks on top with an unassisted power-play goal at 12:56. The sophomore battled for the puck behind the net, skated to the top of the right circle and snapped a low shot past Palmer.
Two and a half minutes after Ferraro gave Saint Anselm the lead, senior Jon Pallotta made it a two-goal advantage with his eighth of the year, extending his point streak to four-straight games. Pallotta a shot by sophomore Liam O'Sullivan from the left point out of the air after sophomore Jake Grade held the puck in along the right boards and sent a pass across the ice to O'Sullivan.
Soucy made 24 saves to earn his second victory of the season, while Palmer fell to 4-10-2 despite a 30-save evening. Saint Anselm was 1-for-3 on the power play and killed off all three of Stonehill's chance with the extra skater, including 30 seconds of a 5-on-3 early in the second period with the score still 1-0.
The Hawks hit the road this weekend to face NE10-leading Saint Michael's in a two-game series. The two teams will start the series at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2 with the Purple Knights sitting three points ahead of Saint Anselm having played two more NE10 games than the Hawks.
