SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Junior Bryan Green scored a pair of third-period goals to break a 2-2 tie and give the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team a 4-2 victory over Saint Michael's on Saturday at Cairns Arena.
Both of Green's third-period goals came in the final 10 minutes of the game as Saint Anselm (10-9-1, 7-4-0 NE10) earned a split in the weekend series against Saint Michael's (11-8-2, 8-4-1 NE10). Freshman Alec Andreucci added a career-high three assists for the Hawks, who also got 34 saves from junior Colin Soucy to match his career high set last season at Saint Michael's.
Following a scoreless first period, the Purple Knights got on the board early in the second on Paul McAuliffe's first of two goals in the game at 1:49. Midway through the period, junior Jeremy Carignan evened it up at 1-1 by sending a shot from the right circle into the top-right corner on the power play from Liam O'Sullivan and Andreucci.
Less than three minutes later, sophomore Sean Verrier netted his first goal of the season, the second of his young career, to give Saint Anselm its first lead of the weekend, tipping a Shawn Moors shot out of the air in the slot. McAuliffe tied the game for the second time in the final minute of the second with an unassisted goal, blasting a slap shot from the right circle after intercepting the puck at the blue line.
The third period belonged to Green, who grabbed his first goal of the period, the eventual game-winner, at 10:47 after receiving a back-door pass from Andreucci on a 2-on-1 break. The junior gave his team an insurance goal with 2:09 to go, winning a 1-on-1 battle before firing home a shot from the left circle.
Soucy earned his third win of the season behind his season-high 34 saves. Counterpart Tim Decker made 27 saves in defeat for the Purple Knights, who held a 36-31 advantage in shots on goal in the game. The Hawks went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Saint Michael's was 0-for-3.
Next up for Saint Anselm is a series on the road against Franklin Pierce on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9-10. Puck drop between the Hawks and Ravens is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Winchendon School.
