Men's ice hockey blanks Franklin Pierce to clinch NE10 postseason berth

WINCHENDON, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team blanked Franklin Pierce University, 4-0, to clinch its 19th-straight berth in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Men's Ice Hockey Championship on Friday evening at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.

Reigning Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week Alec Andreucci recorded a career-high four points on two goals and two assists to lead the way for Saint Anselm (11-9-1, 8-4-0 NE10), which has appeared in the NE10 Tournament every year it has been held. The victory was also Saint Anselm's 18th in 18 all-time meetings against Franklin Pierce (6-15-1, 2-8-1 NE10) and brought the Hawks within a point of NE10 co-leaders Saint Michael's and Assumption.

In addition to Andreucci's second-straight career night, sophomore Mike Ferraro recorded a pair of assists and seniors Nick Gorski and Jon Pallotta found the back of the net for the Hawks. Eight Saint Anselm skaters recorded at least one point in the victory and junior Colin Soucy logged his second shutout of the season with 20 saves to move to 4-4-1 on the season.

Gorski scored the lone goal of the first two periods at 15:22 of the first for his first goal of the season and the second of his career. From behind the goal line, Bryan Green found Andreucci in the right circle and Andreucci's centering pass deflected into the high slot to Gorski, who stepped in and fired the puck into the top-left corner.

The score remained 1-0 until early in the third when Pallotta scored the first of three third-period goals for the Hawks. At 2:26, Andreucci led a rush into the offensive end, dropped a pass for Pallotta in the slot and the senior picked out he top-right corner to make it 2-0.

Andreucci scored the final two goals of the game to help Saint Anselm pull away in the final eight minutes. The freshman got his first of the game at 12:11 when Sean Verrier found Andreucci in the slot from the left-wing circle, with John Femia also picking up an assist.

With exactly one minute left in the third, Andreucci capped the scoring with a power-play goal from Ferraro and Jeremy Carignan. On the rush, Ferraro cut across the slot to the right side and slipped the puck back across the crease to Andreucci for an easy finish at the left post.

Tom McGuckin made 35 saves in the loss for Franklin Pierce, which was outshot 39-20 in the game by Saint Anselm. The two teams finish the weekend in a 7:30 p.m. start on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena at Winchendon School.
