SHELTON, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team defeated Post University, 6-3, to extend its season-long winning streak to four games on Tuesday evening at the Sports Center of Connecticut.
Junior Kevin Curley scored his first-career goal just 17 seconds into the game to get Saint Anselm (13-9-1) off to a quick start. After trailing 3-0 late in the first period, Post (2-20-1) closed to within a goal 1:19 into the second, but the Hawks scored the next three goals to pull away. Saint Anselm won the three regular-season meetings by a combined score of 17-3.
Junior Jeremy Carignan recorded a season-high three points on a goal and two assists, while senior Justin Longo and sophomore Mike Ferraro each contributed a goal and an assist. Ten different skaters had at least one point for Saint Anselm, which fired 50 shots on net, its second-highest total of the season (58 vs. Post on Nov. 11, 2017).
Shortly after the opening faceoff, Ferraro circled behind the net and found Carignan near the slot. Carignan dropped the puck back to Curley, who scored on a wrist shot from the right point for Saint Anselm's second goal in the opening minute of a game this season. Junior Bryan Green scored after 34 seconds in a win over Southern New Hampshire on Nov. 10, 2017.
Timed at 17 seconds, Curley's goal was the fastest to start a game by a Saint Anselm skater since Michael Martinello '02 scored 17 seconds in against then-New Hampshire College on Nov. 25, 2000.
Saint Anselm doubled its lead to 2-0 at 8:56 of the opening period when junior Brian Cameron scored his team's second short-handed goal of the season. Cameron picked the puck off a defender near the blue line in the offensive end and scored on a mini-breakaway for his second of the year.
Like Cameron, senior Nick Gorski grabbed his second goal of the season at 14:46 of the first to push the lead to 3-0, firing in a one-timer from the right point after Carignan fed him the puck from in the left corner.
Trailing 3-0, Post mounted a rally late in the first and early in the second. Kieran Hurley got the Eagles on the board with a power-play goal with two seconds left in the first and Noah Wild added a tally at 1:19 of the second to make it a one-goal game.
A little over three minutes after Wild's goal, Longo capitalized on a turnover deep in the Post defensive end to score his second of the season at 4:42. The goal came shortly after sophomore Joey Harrington hustled back defensively to break up an apparent Post breakaway.
The Hawks pushed their lead to 6-2 with two goals three minutes apart in the third. Ferraro grabbed his team-leading 15th goal of the season at 9:18 on a one-timer from the slot after Liam O'Sullivan found the sophomore after collecting a cross-ice pass from Longo.
Carignan added a power-play goal at 12:18 before Jake Raleigh closed out the scoring for Post at 15:46. Both teams were 1-for-5 on the power play in the game.
Brandon Brown made 44 saves for the Eagles, while Colin Soucy recorded 29 saves, three shy of his season high, for the Hawks.
Saint Anselm returns home to Sullivan Arena for Senior Night against crosstown-rival Southern New Hampshire on Friday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.
