Men's ice hockey fall short against UNE on Friday night

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team lost to the University of New England, 6-4, in a Friday night exhibition contest at Sullivan Arena.

The Nor'easters came out strong in the opening period. The first goal came at 6:41 of the period on a goal by Alexander VukotaJeff Eppright and Tyler Seltenreich cycled the puck around the slot to find Vukota low by the net, who finished the play to put his team up 1-0.

The University of New England scored seven minutes later to build a 2-0 lead on a goal by Derek Mecrones. The road team also killed off a pair of penalties in the first period.

After a short-handed goal put the Nor'easters ahead 3-0 midway through the second period, the Hawks finally broke through with a goal by sophomore Matt Chisholm (Scituate, Mass.) with an assist by classmate Michael Foggia (Rumson, N.J.). However, the visitors scored two goals in the final minute of the second period to head into intermission ahead 5-1.

Saint Anselm scored on the power play with 7:18 gone in the third period on a by junior Mike Ferraro (Northbridge, Mass.) as classmate Trey Aiello (Williamsburg, Va.) dished out the helper on the play. The two teams combined for three goals in the final two and a half minutes of regulation as the Nor'easters went up 6-2 at 17:30 of the period.

Ferraro picked up his second tally on the night at 18:39 before Chisholm added his second with 25 seconds remaining. Senior Joey Harrington (Braintree, Mass.) contributed on Ferraro's second goal while sophomore Alec Andreucci (Guilford, Conn.) had the helper on Chisholm's second goal.

The Nor'easters held a 28-23 edge in shots on goal in the game while killing off three penalties. The Hawks killed of 4-of-5 of the penalties they were handed.

Senior Colin Soucy (North Andover, Mass.) had 11 saves in the opening 20 minutes for Saint Anselm. Freshman Michal Soustal (Unicov, Czech Republic) finished with seven saves in the second period while classmate Alex Daccord (North Andover, Mass.) made four saves in his relief effort during the third period.

For the University of New England, Ben Churchfield made 12 saves on 13 shots faced in 40 minutes in net while Tate Sproxton had seven saves in the third period.

The Hawks officially open their 50th season of men's ice hockey in the regular-season home opener on Saturday, Oct. 27 against the Beavers from Babson College at 4 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
