MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team downed previously undefeated Assumption College, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Arena in Northeast-10 Conference play.
The Hawks improve to 3-2-0 overall and are 3-1 in NE10 action while the Greyhounds fall to 5-1-0 overall and 1-1 against league opponents.
A day after scoring his first collegiate goal, junior Dave Almeida (Bristol, R.I.) scored twice for the Hawks, including a short-handed tally. Senior Bryan Green (Weymouth, Mass.) and juniors Mike Ferraro (Northbridge, Mass.) and Sean Verrier (Reading, Mass.) also tallied markers for Saint Anselm. Senior goaltender Colin Soucy (North Andover, Mass.) made 22 saves in net.
The Greyhounds struck first, coming out physical in the opening period. A redirection in front of the net by Robert Holyoke gave the visitors a 1-0 lead just 1:15 into the game. Assumption maintained that lead until the 11:16 mark of the opening period, when the Hawks evened the score. Verrier found a loose puck in front of the net and put it away.
The Hawks took the lead at 15:08 of the first and never looked back. Almeida ripped a shot through traffic and the puck found the back of the net to make it 2-1 in favor of the Hawks heading into the first intermission.
Green gave the home team a 3-1 lead midway through the second period, sniping a shot from the slot on a pass by sophomore Matt Chisholm (Scituate, Mass.). A power play goal at 12:20 extended Saint Anselm's advantage as junior Jake Grade (Falmouth, Maine) sent a pass from the left circle to the right, finding Ferraro for the one-timer at the circle into a gaping net.
Almeida rounded out the scoring on a short-handed opportunity at 1:07 of the final period. After forcing a turnover in the neutral zone, he skated across the blue line and sniped the upper left corner of the net to make it 5-1.
After that goal, both teams combined for nine penalties during the final 15 minutes of play, including two matching penalties in the waning minutes. Assumption had a slim 23-22 edge in shots in the game. The Hawks went one-for-six on the power play in the game.
Saint Anselm travels to Worcester, Mass. on Tuesday, Nov. 13 to take on the Lancers of Worcester State University in a non-conference tilt. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
