WORCESTER, MASS. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team lost to Worcester State University, 5-1, on Tuesday night in a non-conference battle at the Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center.
The Hawks fall to 3-3 on the season while the Lancers improve to 4-2.
Saint Anselm had a power play opportunity at 10:43 of the first period and fired four shots on net. However, Aaron Callan came up big for the Lancers to keep the game scoreless. Worcester State would go on to take a 1-0 lead with 2:16 left to play on a tip in by Mike Moran.
The Hawks responded early in the second period. After the Hawks successfully killed off a penalty, freshman Kevin Ouellette (Arlington, Mass.) skated down the right side of the ice and sent a wrist shot over the blocker of Callan to even the score at the 3:58 mark of the period. Senior Kevin Curley (Avon, Mass.) picked up an assist on the play.
Senior goaltender Colin Soucy (North Andover, Mass.) kept the game tied midway through the second period after a series of sprawling saves.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, Worcester State continued to exert strong pressure throughout the second period and it finally paid off. Steven Tettoni put away the puck at 12:28 with traffic in front, before the Lancers made it 3-1 only 57 seconds later on a goal by Will Ahearn. A late opportunity for sophomore Alec Andreucci (Guilford, Conn.) was denied by Callan with 2:35 left in the second period.
The Hawks opened the third period with a power play that carried over from the second. They peppered Callan with two shots, but the Lancers also blocked a pair of shots as well to kill of their third penalty of the night. Worcester State added to its lead at 6:22 of the final period.
Saint Anselm had a pair of power play opportunities in the third period, including a five-minute major penalty early in the period. However, the Hawks could not take advantage. A late goal for Worcester State with 1:32 left to play concluded the scoring.
Soucy finished the night with 24 saves in net. His counterpart, Callan, had 25 stops for the Lancers. Worcester State outshot the Hawks by a slim margin of 29-26 and blocked 15 shots as a team.
Saint Anselm continues its road trip with a pair of non-conference games this upcoming weekend in Shelton, Conn. against Post University. The first game of the series is on Friday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.
