MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team picked up a non-conference win over the University of Southern Maine, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Arena.
The Hawks improve to 7-5 overall while the Huskies fall to 1-6-2 on the year.
Senior Bryan Green (Weymouth, Mass.) had two goals for Saint Anselm while sophomore Shawn Moors (Pointe Claire, Quebec) had three points with a goal and a pair of assists. Freshman Anthony Iacullo (Barrington, Ill.) scored his first career goal in the two-goal victory for the Hawks.
Moors got the scoring going with under four minutes gone in the opening period. He skated down the left side of the ice on a breakaway and gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead at the 3:50 mark. After not converting on a pair of power plays midway through the first, Saint Anselm finally took advantage on its third of the game. Moors found Green at the top of the point, who fired a shot through traffic, extending Saint Anselm's lead at 13:06 of the first period.
Senior goaltender Colin Soucy (North Andover, Mass) helped the Hawks maintain a two-goal lead heading into the first period, stopping four shots in the final three and a half minutes.
The Huskies wasted little time in cutting Saint Anselm's lead in half to start the second period, scoring 44 seconds into the stanza. Colin Merrill sent a shot on net and the rebound went straight to Bobby Kinsey, who put the loose puck under the pads of Soucy. The Hawks went into the second intermission with a 2-1 lead after killing off three penalties in the frame.
The teams traded a pair of penalties in the first 10 minutes of the third period before the Hawks scored on the power play at 11:42 to make it 3-1 on Green's second goal of the game. Iacullo made it 4-1 at 13:18 on another power play tally for the Hawks. Sophomore Alec Andreucci (Guilford, Conn.) sent a pass from the left circle to the right, where Iacullo fired a blast by Huskies goalie Paul Leger.
Southern Maine also scored on the power play with 1:25 remaining in the third period. Michael Green put a shot on net and Tyler Mathieu pushed the puck through a scrum of players to make it 4-2 in favor of the Hawks.
The Huskies had a 30-24 advantage in shot. The Hawks were 3-of-7 on the power play while the visitors were 1-of-7. Soucy made 28 saves for Saint Anselm while Leger finished with 20 saves for the Southern Maine.
Saint Anselm will hit the road on Tuesday, Dec. 4 for a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt in Waterville, Maine to take on the Mules from Colby College.
