Men's ice hockey tripped up at Norwich, 6-3

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team posted a 6-3 loss to Norwich University on Saturday in exhibition play from Kreitzberg Arena.

The Hawks hopped on the board first, scoring near the midway point of the first period, but Norwich fired off five of the game's next six goals to capture a commanding 5-2 lead with under 10 minutes to go in regulation time.

Freshman Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) put Saint Anselm ahead at 9:27 of the first period with a power play goal set up by senior Mike Ferraro (Northbridge, Mass.) and junior Alec Andreucci (Guilford, Conn.), but the Cadets countered with goals down the stretch from Scott Swanson and an extra-man tally from Carter Cowlthorp.

The Hawks tied the game at two with an even-strength marker from senior Liam O'Sullivan (North Hampton, N.H.) at 7:06, but the Cates responded with a go-ahead goal from Michael Korol with under five minutes to go in the second period.

Norwich had three of the game's final four goals, including an empty net tally by Noah Williams with 15 seconds left in regulation time. Senior Chris Googins (Braintree, Mass.) had the lone Saint Anselm goal in the third period, putting home a pass from junior Jonathan Folsom (Middleton, Mass.).

Sophomore Michal Soustal (Unicov, Czech Republic) made 11 saves in the first 20 minutes, yielding only two goals. Classmate Alex Daccord (North Andover, Mass.) came on to play the second period, making five saves on six shots, prior to freshman Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) halting six-of-eight Cadets shots in the final stanza.

Andrew Albano and Ben Nelson allowed three goals for Norwich on 24 shots. The Cadets were led by two-point performances from Alex Monteleone, Maxime Borduas and Williams.

The Hawks will take on another exhibition opponent, New England College, on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. in Sullivan Arena. Saint Anselm officially opens its 51st season as a varsity program on Friday, Nov. 1, battling Lebanon Valley at 7 p.m. on the Hilltop.
