MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team came out on top of the visiting Greyhounds of Assumption College, 5-3, on Friday night at Sullivan Arena.
The Hawks improve to 7-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in Northeast-10 play. The Greyhounds drop to 3-4-1 on the year, 2-3-0 against conference opponents. The Hawks wrap up the semester with a home contest against in-state and NE10 rival Franklin Pierce on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 4 p.m.
Senior co-captain Trey Aiello (Williamsburg, Va.) got the Hawks going at 3:12 of the first period with freshman Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.) following up with a goal of his own at 9:19, giving Saint Anselm a 2-0 lead. From behind the goal, senior Mike Ferraro (Northbridge, Mass.) dished a pass to Andary for the one-timer.
Robert Holyoke of the Greyhounds answered at 16:45 to cut the Hawks lead in half.
Senior Liam O'Sullivan (North Hampton, N.H.) converted 40 seconds into the second period to give the Hawks a 3-1 advantage. O'Sullivan fired home a shot from right inside the blue line.
John Pigott brought the game back to within one score with a goal at 4:58.
Sophomore Kilian Hammersmith (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) sunk a tally five minutes later off a two-on-one opportunity and ended the second period scoring. The Hawks led 4-2 heading into the final period.
Robert Roche narrowed the margin back to one after scoring 1:08 in the final period. Both teams battled in the remainder of the period before Ferraro converted an empty-net goal with nine seconds left in regulation. Ferraro's tally clinched the 5-3 win for the Hawks, his sixth goal of the season.
Sophomore Michal Soustal (Unicov, Czech Republic) earned his fourth win of the season stopping 21 shots. Soustal is now 4-1-0 in the 2019-20 campaign. His counterpart, David Zulauf earned 23 saves. Sophomore Anthony Iacullo (Barrington, Ill.) won 11 of his 19 possible face-offs.
