Men’s ice hockey bests Southern Maine, 4-1

GORHAM, Maine – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey squad defeated the University of Southern Maine, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.

The Hawks improved to 9-7-1 overall on the year while the Huskies closed the weekend out with a 4-7-2 record. Saint Anselm, who recorded the 25th victory in the two-season career of Head Coach Larry Rocha '79, will return home for a weekend series against Post on Jan. 17-18.

Senior Sean Verrier (Reading, Mass.) opened the scoring by chipping the puck in for his 33rd career goal at 5:47. The Huskies answered later in the first period with a goal by Derek Tillotson, tying the game at one at 17:15.

Saint Anselm jumped on an early scoring chance in the second period as first-year Chris Lemay (Salem, N.H.) pushed the puck in after gaining a rebound off a first-year Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) shot at 6:38. Sophomore Kilian Hammersmith (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) increased the Hawks lead a few minutes later as he netted a goal at 13:46.

In the third period, the Hawks maintained a 3-1 lead before junior John Femia (Canton, Mass.) scored on the empty-net opportunity.

Senior Trey Aiello (Williamsburg, Va.) played in his 100th career game which is five away from reaching the top-10 in team history.

Freshman Nick Howard (Burlington, Mass.) played his part in the win as he recorded 27 saves, yielding only one goal. In his season debut, Peter Ciccarelli of the Huskies logged 28 saves in the loss.

The Hawks finished with a narrow 32-28 shots advantage.
