#18 Men’s Lacrosse hangs on to beat St. Michael’s, 10-7

COLCHESTER, Vt. – The #18-ranked Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 10-7 victory over Saint Michael's College on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action in Colchester, Vt.

The Hawks improve to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in the NE10 and are back in action when they return home for a conference matchup against Assumption College on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. St. Michael's falls to 1-6 and 0-6 in league games with the setback.

Dylan Ryan led Saint Anselm with a four-point day on two goals and two assists. Ryan Hesseltine and Patrick Sweeney registered two goals and an assist apiece, while James Olsen had two goals and Anthony Busconi had two assists. Mark Vitello added a goal and an assist, with Xavier Quinn rounding out the scoring with a goal.

Lucas DeAngelo picked up his fourth win of the season by stopping 14 shots on 21 shots faced and added four groundballs and a caused turnover. Derrick LaBranche also grabbed four groundballs while causing three turnovers. Chris McCormack led the Saint Anselm defense with seven groundballs while going 10-for-21 on face-offs.

St. Michael's was led by a hat trick from Connor McGuirk, while Anthony Sullivan had a pair of goals and two assists. Taylor Wallace also had a pair of goals, with Brian Loughlin picking up a pair of assists. Matt Hanley suffered the defeat, stopping 14 shots on 24 shots faced.

The two teams traded goals the entire first quarter as Saint Anselm took a 4-3 lead into the second period. Olsen, Vitello, Hesseltine and Ryan scored the goals for Saint Anselm, while Sullivan, McGuirk and Taylor Wallace found the back of the net for the Purple Knights.

Olsen opened the scoring in the second quarter with his second tally of the game to put Saint Anselm in front 5-3, but McGuirk answered for the home team with three minutes to play in the half to keep St. Michael's within one at 5-4. In the final minute of action, Busconi found Sweeney for his first goal of the game to give the Hawks a 6-4 lead.

St. Michael's scored first in the third quarter as Wallace scored on a feed from Charlie Murphy. With 5:01 remaining, the Hawks went on the man advantage and Sweeney stretched the Hawks lead back out to 7-5 with his 24th goal of the season.

Quinn and Ryan opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals less than a minute apart to give the Hawks a little breathing room with a 9-5 lead. They would trade goals the rest of the game, but Saint Anselm hung on for the 10-7 victory.

The Hawks held a 43-35 edge in shots and grabbed 39 groundballs to just 28 for the Purple Knights. Saint Anselm committed one more turnover (19) than St. Michael's (18), while both teams were effective on clears as the Hawks went 19-for-23 and the Purple Knights were 20-of-22.
