MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Matt Ward of the nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team was named the Northeast-10 Conference's Rookie of the Week on Wednesday.
He is the first NE10 Rookie of the Week selection from Saint Anselm since James Peters won the award on Apr. 23, 2012.
Ward and the Hawks, ranked 16th in NCAA Division II by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, defeated No. 9-ranked Pace on Wednesday, Apr. 11 by a 12-7 margin before cruising past Bentley, 14-8, on Senior Day this past Saturday, Apr. 14. The win over Pace was his team's first against a top-10 opponent since the 2012 campaign.
Last week, Ward led all Hawks freshmen by scoring six goals and two assists for eight points (6-2=8). Against ninth-ranked Pace, Ward scored a career-high five points off of four goals and one assist (4-1=5) and caused a turnover.
Versus Bentley on Saturday, he potted two goals and one assist for three points (2-1=3) and has recorded at least two points in all but one of his games on the season, including five straight games entering Saturday's tilt with Assumption.
The Hawks head to Assumption this Saturday, Apr. 21 for a 4 p.m. showdown with the Greyhounds.
