Ward's career day paces men's lacrosse against Post

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Matt Ward (Shrewsbury, Mass.) of the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team posted a career-high seven goals, adding an assist along the way to help the Hawks breeze past Post University by a 25-9 score on Saturday.

Saint Anselm, receiving votes in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association National Coaches' Poll, improves to 2-2 on the year while Post falls to 1-7 following the non-league contest. The Hawks fired 25 goals, coming up one goal shy of matching the single-game program record, and recorded 18 assists to finish with 43 points of offense, the second-most all-time in one game.

Ward's eight points led student-athletes from both programs. Senior Patrick Sweeney (North Andover, Mass.) fired four goals and three assists for seven points (4-3=7), moving to seventh place in team history with 128 points of offense (96-32=128), and stands just four goals shy of 100. Freshman Jack Wells (Melrose, Mass.) earned his first collegiate hat trick, posting three goals.

Sophomore Sean Tomaszewski (Arlington, Mass.) handed out five assists, becoming the first student-athlete since Geoff Kennedy '15 on Apr. 25, 2015 to dish out five helpers in one game. Seven student-athletes posted at least one goal and 16 Hawks recorded at least one assist in the convincing victory.

Sophomore Allen Jarabek (Fall River, Mass.) won 17 of his 22 faceoff attempts for the Hawks, reeling in a career-best 14 ground balls and falling one shy of tying the team's single-game record of 15, recorded on three separate occasions. Classmate Ryan Melley (Reading, Mass.) secured nine victories at the "X" in 14 opportunities.

The Hawks opened up a 9-0 lead through the game's first 14:49 before a late Post tally snapped the streak. Saint Anselm countered with nine more goals in the second quarter to build an 18-1 advantage at halftime. The Hawks picked up 27 ground balls through the first 30 minutes of play, firing 28 of the game's 38 shots to that point.

Post came out of the locker room with two of the second half's first three goals and finished the contest outscoring Saint Anselm 8-7 in the game's final 30 minutes. The Hawks kept pace with the first career goals for freshman Ben Genest (Salem, N.H.) and the first collegiate assists for classmate Matt Rawding (Beverly, Mass.) and Tommy Ackil (Southborough, Mass.).

Senior Anthony Busconi (Watertown, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan Richards (Mendon, Mass.) each had a goal and two assists with senior Xavier Quinn (Rye, N.H.) tallying a goal and an assist. Junior James Righini (Weymouth, Mass.) notched two goals with junior George Geraghty (Norwich, Vt.) and sophomore Griffin Shoemaker (Shirley, Mass.) scoring once.

Senior Matteo Olsen (Westford, Vt.) and sophomore Thomas Mapstone (Andover, Mass.) rounded out the point scoring with assists.

Senior Nick Richard (Hampstead, N.H.) made the start in goal, yielding one goal but earning the victory for the Hawks. Sophomore CJ Hart (Reading, Mass.) made a game-high three saves in the second quarter with junior Jeremy Lewis (Needham, Mass.) and freshman Lance Pfeninger-Racine (Dartmouth, Mass.) yielding a combined eight goals alongside three saves.

Manuele D'Alessio drew the loss for Post, allowing 25 goals on 32 shots. Post was led by three goals from Corey Auten.
