COLCHESTER, Vt. – Goals from Keith Hill and Jack Heintzelman sent the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team to its first victory of the season via a 2-1 road win over Saint Michael's College on Wednesday at Duffy Field.
Hill scored his first-career goal in the fifth minute and Heintzelman netted a free kick in the 63rd minute to put Saint Anselm (1-3-1, 1-2-0 NE10) ahead 2-0. Saint Michael's (1-3-1, 0-3-0 NE10) got one goal back just 3:12 after Heintzelman's free kick, but the Hawks held on for the road victory in the second meeting between the two programs this year.
Just 4:37 into the game, Dan Kelly headed an Emmet O'Callaghan corner kick to Hill, who sent a header of his own inside the left post to open the scoring. After not recording a point from his position in the backline last season, Hill has a goal and an assist through four games already this season. Kelly's assist was the third of his career.
Saint Anselm maintained its one-goal advantage until Heintzelman scored his second goal of the season from a free kick in the 63rd minute. The free kick marked the second-straight game that Heintzelman has found the back of the net and was the third game-winning goal of his career.
Less than four minutes after Heintzelman's free kick, Jacob von Giebel pulled one back for Saint Michael's, slotting an Adrian Diaz corner into the bottom-right corner to make it a 2-1 game. Jacob Rostkowski faced just one shot in the remaining 25 minutes after von Giebel's strike, saving a Jake Bannon effort with 1:36 left.
Saint Michael's outshot Saint Anselm by one in both halves and by a 13-11 margin in the game. Rostkowski earned his first win in a Saint Anselm jersey with a three-save performance, while Leland Gazo took the loss with three saves of his own for the Purple Knights.
Saint Anselm hosts third-ranked Adelphi University on Saturday, Sept. 23 in an 11 a.m. kickoff at Melucci Field.
