MANCHESTER, N.H. – Third-ranked Adelphi University scored each of its goals in the first 10 minutes of either half on its way to a 3-0 victory over the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon at Melucci Field.
Andre De Giorgi netted the opener for Adelphi (5-0-1, 4-0-0 NE10) inside the first 10 minutes of the game and James Thristino and Alex Varkatzas scored in the opening six minutes of the second half. The Panthers outshot Saint Anselm (1-4-1, 1-3-0 NE10) by an 18-3 margin in the game.
De Giorgi scored his 10th goal of the season after 9:26, tapping in a rebound in front after Helio Meirelles Neto made a diving save on a Varkatzas shot. Neto made four more saves in the opening half to keep it a 1-0 game and the Hawks nearly found a tying goal with two minutes left in the opening half, when a Jack Heintzelman cross from the right evaded an unmarked Colin Cain in front of goal.
The Panthers scored two goals 53 seconds apart in the first 5:49 of the second half to give the visitors breathing room. Thristino finished off a through ball by Stephen Megaloudis inside the far post. Less than a minute later, Varkatzas capped the scoring, one-timing a Matt Giaconelli cross from the right end line into the lower-left corner.
Neto made six saves on the afternoon but took the loss. Raymond Leto picked up the win for Adelphi, stopping the lone shot on goal he faced in the first 74:41 of the game. Brian Morgan played the final 15:19 in net for the Panthers.
Saint Anselm hosts Franklin Pierce on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. at Melucci Field.
