NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Filippo Begliardi Ghidini scored the only goal of the game in the final minute of the first half to give No. 14-ranked Merrimack College a 1-0 victory over the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team on Tuesday evening at Martone-Mejail Field.
Begliardi Ghidini, the reigning Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week, netted his team-leading seventh goal of the season with 51 seconds remaining in the opening half for Merrimack (10-1-1, 7-0-1 NE10) to keep the Warriors unbeaten in the NE10. Saint Anselm (3-6-1, 3-5-0 NE10) was facing its fourth ranked opponent of the season.
Helio Meirelles Neto made three of his seven saves in the opening 5:17 of the game to prevent Merrimack from an early opening goal. The Hawks kept the Warriors off the board until Begliardi Ghinidi broke the deadlock just before the break by nodding in a Michael Dushman cross.
Ten minutes into the second half, Mattia Lanzi hit the post as Merrimack nearly doubled its lead. The Warriors held the Hawks without a shot on goal in the second half until a Kyler Thayer effort was saved by Lucas Rezende in the 89th minute, as Rezende went on to record his eighth shutout of the season.
Merrimack held an 18-6 advantage in shots, which included an 8-1 margin in shots on goal, and had all eight corner kicks in the game.
Saint Anselm travels to Le Moyne on Saturday, Oct. 14 for a 2 p.m. kickoff against the Dolphins.
