Men's soccer falls to Saint Michael's in Community Cup tilt

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Freshman Michael Budrewicz (Boxford, Mass.) of the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team tallied his first collegiate goal during Wednesday's 3-1 loss to the Purple Knights from Saint Michael's College.

The Hawks (0-1) and Purple Knights (1-2) faced off in the second annual Community Cup match, with both programs raising funds for the Winooski School District. Funds will support pre-kindergarten to high school students' day-to-day needs as well as seasonal items and athletic equipment. 

Saint Michael's scored just 59 seconds in off the foot of Jacob van Giebel, giving the Purple Knights the early 1-0 advantage.

At the half, Saint Anselm out-shot the Purple Knights 7-6, but were unable to find the back of the net.

The Purple Knights struck again mid-way through the second half on a pass from Miguel Diaz to Jake Bannon, bringing the score to 2-0. Junior Wesley Lord scored with 9:31 left in the game off a pass from freshman Kyle Brady, giving Saint Michael's the 3-0 advantage.

Budrewicz scored his first goal in a Hawks uniform with exactly seven minutes left in regulation time. Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.) and Nick Heckt (South Windsor, Conn.) picked up assists, setting up Budrewicz with give-and-go passing, breaking up the shutout.

Senior Jacob Rostkowski (Rockport, Mass.) made five saves in net for the Hawks, taking the loss. Leland Gazo and Gabriel Pineda combined for the win for Saint Michael's, stopping six of the seven Hawks shots on target. 

The Hawks look to rebound from the loss as they take on the Knights of Queens College this Sunday, Sept. 9 at 3:30 p.m. at Melucci Field.
