EASTON, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team battled Stonehill College nearly shot for shot, but a goal with just over a minute left in double overtime gave the Skyhawks a 1-0 victory on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action from Skyhawk Field.
The Hawks fall to 0-10-2 overall and 0-8-2 in NE10 action while Stonehill improves to 6-6-1 overall and 5-5 in league play.
Keegan Nutt took a cross from Luke Fuller at the 30 yard line. Nutt fired a shot over Hawks senior keeper Jacob Rostkowski (Rockport, Mass.) for the game-winning tally with 1:09 left in the second overtime period.
The Hawks nearly had a chance with five minutes left in the second overtime but sophomore Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.) sent the ball just wide of the net.
Stonehill had a chance in the first 21 seconds of the first overtime period after a Saint Anselm foul. A free kick was sent in from 25 yards out on the left side but Rostkowski came up with the save.
Rostkowski made a great save in the 40th minute on a header by Stephen Vercollone, grabbing the ball out of the air to keep the game scoreless. The Hawks nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute as freshman Taylor Silverstein (Concord, N.H.) sent the ball just over the cross bar from just outside the 18 yard box.
Stonehill had a slim 15-12 margin in shots and 7-4 in the first half. However, only two shots from each side landed on net. The Skyhawks held a 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
Saint Anselm wraps up a two-game road swing with a trip to Worcester, Mass. on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Hawks will take on the Greyhounds of Assumption College in NE10 play at 7 p.m.
