COLCHESTER, Vt. – Adam Weinstein, Daniel Kmetz, Brian Kavanagh and Brian Madden were each victorious in both singles and doubles to lead the Saint Anselm College men's tennis team to a 7-2 victory over Saint Michael's College on Tuesday afternoon at Tarrant Recreation Center.
Saint Anselm (4-10, 1-4 NE10) used two doubles wins and five singles victories to pick up its first Northeast-10 Conference victory of the season. The win was the third in a row for the Hawks over Saint Michael's (1-7, 0-2 NE10) and was the first NE10 win for first-year head coach Alejandro Andres.
For the second match in a row, Saint Anselm took a 2-1 lead into singles, getting wins from the pairs of Weinstein and Kmetz and Kavanagh and Madden. Weinstein and Kmetz picked up their third win in the last four matches with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Kavanagh and Madden also won for the third time in four thanks to an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles. The Hawks nearly had a doubles sweep, but Dan Foley and Hayden Steward edged Eric Howes and Kyle Harris in a tiebreaker, 9-7, at the top spot.
The Hawks extended their lead to 4-1 by winning the first two singles matches to finish. Kmetz recorded a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Foley at No. 3 singles and Weinstein topped Patrick Dietz 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) at the second spot. Ben Lambert gave the hosts their lone singles point by rallying from a set down for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles.
Kavanagh provided the clinching fifth point by outlasting Steward 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 at No. 4 singles for his fifth victory of the season. Harris battled to a 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) win at No. 5 singles for his team-high seventh singles win, while Madden won 6-4, 6-0 at the sixth spot for his second-straight victory.
Saint Anselm hosts Adelphi on Saturday, March 25 in a 2 p.m. start.
