Men's tennis opens spring slate with 4-3 setback at Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Anselm College men's tennis team was downed by the host Purple Knights from Saint Michael's College on Saturday, falling by a 4-3 margin at the Tarrant Recreation Center.

Saint Anselm falls to 0-9 on the season and to 0-5 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Saint Michael's ups its overall record to 2-3, earning its first NE10 victory since the 2015-16 campaign. The Hawks head to Bentley on Wednesday, Apr. 3 for a 3 p.m. showdown.

The Hawks forged a 1-0 lead after sweeping both doubles matches. Freshman Michael Rosen (Andover, Mass.) and senior Daniel Kmetz (Amston, Conn.) partnered at No. 1 doubles and earned a 6-3 decision. Freshman Ethan Hall (Duxbury, Mass.) and sophomore transfer Sam Kluger (Nashua, N.H.) added a win at No. 2 doubles, taking care of their opponents with a 6-4 result.

Rosen picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, but Matt Mosher and Colby Antonacci followed with No. 3 and No. 4 singles wins, respectively. Hall battled to a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 victory and the Hawks defaulted at No. 6 singles, tying the match at three with only one match remaining, the No. 5 bout of Richard Flandreau (New Fairfield, Conn.) and the Purple Knights' Ivan llona.

Llona captured the first set by a 7-6 margin that was decided with a 10-8 tiebreaker. Saint Michael's eked out the match with Llona posting a 7-5 second-set win to lift his team to the 4-3 overall victory.
