Matthew Gonnella, a 2015 graduate of Saint Anselm College, was named to the coaching staff at his alma mater prior to the 2018 men's and women's cross country seasons.
A competitive runner for The Heartbreakers Running Club out of Boston, Mass., Gonnella has ran the qualifying standard for the Boston Marathon on three occasions, including a sixth-place finish at the 2017 Charles River Run Marathon with a time of 2:59.27. A participant at the 2018 Boston Marathon (2:59:16), Gonnella turned in a time of 1:19.53 (6:06/mile) at the 2018 Hyannis Half Marathon to place 12th, meeting the standard for automatic entry into the New York City Marathon.
Gonnella served as part of the pace team for the 2017 San Francisco Marathon and Half Marathon and currently is a pacer for the Nike Run Club, leading free weekly track workouts for runners of all abilities while providing insight into proper training strategies and techniques.
Gonnella graduated from Saint Anselm with a degree in International Relations and Spanish with a minor in French. He was a member of the men’s cross country team across all four of his years on the Hilltop. The three-time team captain was teammates with current Head Coach Brian Stankiewicz '17, collecting his team's Most Valuable Runner award as a senior. In 2011, Gonnella finished first overall at the Raider Invitational, running an 8K time of 26:56, and currently stands as the last male runner from Saint Anselm to win an individual race. He also posted a career best time of 34:20 in the 10k at the 2012 NCAA East Regional Championship.
Gonnella is also a 2018 graduate of Suffolk University Law School and plans to practice law in the field of regulatory compliance related to athletics upon admission to the Massachusetts Bar.
