Softball Drops Heartbreaker to UMass Lowell, 5-3

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.) hit an RBI triple in the fourth inning to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead, but the Saint Anselm College softball team fell to UMass Lowell, 5-3, for Northeast-10 softball action at the South Athletic Fields.

With the loss, the Hawks will dip to 15-16 overall and 12-8 in NE-10 play, while the River Hawks will improve to 19-18 overall and 13-3 in league play.

Saint Anselm jumped on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Boucher led off the inning with a single to right. With one out, Julie LeClair (Taunton, Mass.) sent a blast at the third baseman, who recovered from being hit by the ball to gun her down at first, however, Boucher advanced to third on the play.

Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.) singled through the left side to score Boucher for the 1-0 lead.

The Hawks made it a 2-0 game in the fourth when Olivia Story (Middleton, Mass.) singled through the left side with one out to start the inning. Boucher came to the plate a batter later and tripled deep to left, scoring Story. Lauren Galavotti (Marion, Mass.) walked to put a second runner on base, but Marielle Handley worked herself out of the jam to escape the Saint Anselm threat.

In the top of the sixth, Merrimack put up two runs on a Melissa King homerun to right center and tacked on three more runs in the seventh. An Ariana Darcy RBI single to right coupled with an Abby Jamieson two-run homerun gave the River Hawks the 5-2 lead.

Galavotti led off the Hawks' final at bat with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a LeClair groundout. Gauthier drove in Galavotti to make the game 5-3 with her hit to the pitcher.

Paige Cormier (Rochester, N.H.) threw 6.2 innings for the Hawks, recording all but the final out, which Tayla Trask (Lincoln, Maine) came in to finish. Cormier worked in four strikeouts, while Trask faced two batters, striking out one.

The Hawks return to action Thursday, April 18 at 3 p.m. when they travel to Saint Michael's College for a doubleheader.
