Softball Punches Ticket to NE-10 Championships with Stonehill Split

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.) homered in her first at bat and Pattie Turner (Warwick, R.I.) hit an RBI single in the fifth inning to help the Saint Anselm College softball team to a 3-2 win over Stonehill College on Saturday afternoon at the South Athletic Field. The Hawks dropped the first game of the doubleheader, 7-1.

With the split, Saint Anselm improves to 21-20 overall and 16-12 in the Northeast-10 conference, while the Skyhawks move to 24-23-1 overall and 16-11-1 in league play. After today's games, the Hawks have clinched the No. 3 seed in the Northeast Division and will play No. 4 Stonehill College in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Championship.

With her homerun to center field in the Hawks' first at bat, Boucher set the tone for the remainder of the game. Stonehill did earn a pair of runs back in the top of the third, however, to take the 2-1 lead.

Saint Anselm took back the lead and sealed the win with two runs in the fifth. Olivia Story (Middleton, Mass.) led off the inning with a single to center. After Hayley Lombard (Boynton Beach, Fla.) reached on a throwing error, Boucher walked to load the bases for Lauren Galavotti (Marion, Mass.). Galavotti hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Story to knot the game at two. Turner followed this up with a single down the left field line to plate Lombard for the 3-2 lead.

Paige Cormier (Rochester, N.H.) retired six of the final seven batters she faced to preserve the win. Not giving up an earned run, Cormier scattered six hits over seven innings and struck out four batters.

In the 7-1 loss, Saint Anselm pushed across its lone run of the game when Hannah Byrne (Lynn, Mass.) scored on Story's RBI groundout.

Tayla Trask (Lincoln, Maine) pitched seven innings, gave up five earned runs and struck out five.

The Hawks return to action Sunday, April 28 at 1 p.m. when they play host to Stonehill for a single game. Sunday Saint Anselm will honor its two seniors Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass.) and Galavotti.
