Softball Completes Series Sweep of Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. – Senior Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.) and sophomore Pattie Turner (Warwick, R.I.) combined for five RBI, each hitting .500 with a pair of doubles on the day as the Saint Anselm College softball team took a pair of games from Franklin Pierce University to complete a four-game series sweep of the Ravens. The Hawks took the first game, 2-1, before grabbing the second 9-2.

Saint Anselm improves to 13-7 overall and 6-3 in the Northeast-10 (3-0 Northeast Division), while the Ravens drop to 4-12 and 3-6 in league play (1-4 NE Division).

GAME ONE

Sophomore Julie LeClair (Taunton, Mass.) claimed a 1-0 lead for Saint Anselm in the second inning when she led off with a home run. Franklin Piece answered with a leadoff home run of its own in the fourth to tie the game, 1-1. The Hawks pushed across the go-ahead run in the sixth when sophomore Emily Crannell (Wilmington, Mass.) scored on a passed ball.

Junior pitcher Tayla Trask (Lincoln, Maine) threw all seven innings in game one and struck out three batters.   

GAME TWO

Junior pitcher Paige Cormier (Rochester, N.H.) earned the win in the second game of the doubleheader, going seven innings for Saint Anselm, giving up just three hits, striking out two and walking one.

The Hawks jumped on the board in the second stanza when Gauthier scored on a passed ball after doubling to left-center. Franklin Pierce took its only lead of the day in its next at bat with a two-run home run, but the Hawks had the answer in the third inning to tie the game, 2-2 when Turner laid down a sacrifice bunt to score senior Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.), who reached on a walk.

Saint Anselm added a five hit, five-run fifth to take a 7-2 lead thanks to doubles from Boucher and Gauthier and a three-run homer from LeClair. The final two Hawk runs came in the sixth when Turner hit a two-RBI double to left field. Boucher and Crannell who reached on a double and single, respectively, both scored on the play.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, April 12 at 12 p.m. when Saint Anselm travels to Assumption College for doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday.
