EASTON, Mass. – Senior Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.) went 4-for-4 and scored three runs, while junior Tayla Trask (Lincoln, Maine) pitched a complete-game shutout to lift the Saint Anselm College softball team to Sunday afternoon's 5-0 victory against Stonehill College at Gartland Field.
The Hawks improve to 26-13 on the season, including 18-9 in Northeast-10 play and 15-6 within the Northeast Division to earn a share of the Northeast Division regular-season title with crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University. Stonehill dips to 20-25, 14-15 NE-10, 11-10 NE-10 NE.
Saint Anselm jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Gauthier singled through the left side to lead off the frame, advanced to second on a sacrifice from classmate Olivia Story (Middleton, Mass.) and scored when sophomore Pattie Turner (Warwick, R.I.) reached on an error by the second baseman.
Saint Anselm then scored three in the third on RBI singles from Gauthier and Turner as well as a sacrifice fly from Story, to open up a 4-0 lead. The Hawks tacked on another run in the seventh when junior Hannah Byrne (Lynn, Mass.) singled to left center to plate Gauthier, who doubled to right center to lead off the stanza.
Trask (15-6) backboned the offensive effort by scattering five hits, while striking out five and walking just one. Senior Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.) went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored, while Turner (RBI), Byrne (RBI) and junior Kasey Moran (Medford, Mass.) were all 1-for-4.
