MANCHESTER, N.H. – For the second consecutive season, Saint Anselm College was selected as one of two host sites for the upcoming 2019 NCAA Division II East Region Softball Championship, slated to begin this Thursday, May 9 and concluding on Saturday, May 11.
Fresh off the program's first-ever Northeast-10 Conference championship title, Saint Anselm secured the top seed in the East Region and will battle three other programs in the four-team regional pod later this week. The last team standing in the double-elimination tournament on Saturday will then take on the winner from the other regional pod, hosted by Wilmington (Del.), on Thursday, May 16 and Friday, May 17 at a site to be determined - if the Hawks win, they would host the Super Regional by virtue of their top seed.
The Hawks will play Bridgeport, the No. 8 seed, on Thursday and Georgian Court, the fourth seed, will battle Southern New Hampshire, the fifth-seeded program, in the other first round contest. Information on game times will be released in the coming days.
Wilmington (Del.), Adelphi, LIU Post and New Haven round out the remaining East Region programs that will compete to dethrone the Hawks, the reigning East Region champions.
It will be the fourth NCAA tournament appearance (2002, 2015, 2018) for the Hawks, who finished last season as the NCAA Division II runner-up. In 2019, Saint Anselm enters the NCAA postseason having won 12 consecutive games and 22 of their last 23 contests. The Hawks enter play ranked 24th in all of NCAA Division II, according to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association national poll.
More information, including a full preview of the regional, will be posted in the coming days. The NCAA Division II Softball Championship series will be held on May 23-27 at the Regency Athletic Complex at MSU Denver in Denver, Colo.
