Pleasantville, N.Y. (February 2) -- Pace knocked down 13 three-pointers on Saturday afternoon to defeat Saint Anselm by an 82-52 final in Northeast-10 women's basketball action at the Goldstein Athletic Center.
Pace got off to a quick 11-0 start before the Hawks got on the board with a backdoor layup from Cassaundra Thorpe (Portsmouth, N.H.) with 14:45 left in the period. The two teams went back and forth over the next eight minutes before a Setter run pushed the lead to 34-15 with just over five minutes left in the period. Saint Anselm then forced a number of Pace turnovers on the next few possessions and after a pair of free throws from Erin Higgins (Mansfield, Mass.), closed to within 34-21 with under four minutes remaining in the half. After a Hawk timeout, the Hawks closed to 34-23 on a jumper from Kate Connolly (Winchester, Mass.), the closest they had been since the midway point of the period. The Setters' Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, N.Y.) picked off a pass in the final seconds of the half and scored on the layup for a 36-23 lead heading into the halftime break. Higgins led the Hawks with six points in the half, while Klingele finished 16 first-half points on 7-of-9 shooting for the Setters.
In the second half, the Setters opened the period with a 12-3 run to push the lead to 24 points with 16:04 left. Pace led by as many as 31 points before coming away with the 30-point victory. The Hawks were led by a 10-point afternoon from sophomore Grace Harrington (Salem, Mass.).
With the loss, the Hawks drop to 6-16 overall and 3-14 in Northeast-10 play, while the Setters improve to 6-14 overall and 5-10 in league play. Saint Anselm is idle for a week before returning to action on Saturday, February 9th when the Hawks host Franklin Pierce for a 1:30 p.m. start in Manchester.
