WORCESTER, Mass. – Seniors Tori Lehr (Cohasset, Mass.) and Allie Jones (So. Kingstown, R.I.) each scored 17 points, while freshman Candace Andrews (Boston, Mass.) added a career-high 16 and knocked down the game-winning 3-pointer to lift the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team to a 68-65 overtime victory against Assumption College on Saturday afternoon at Laska Gymnasium.
The Hawks, who had not defeated Assumption in its home gym since a 69-53 win back on Feb. 12, 2002, improve to 4-2 on the season and 1-2 in Northeast-10 play. The Greyhounds, who are receiving votes in the latest USA Today Division II Poll, dip to 3-2, 0-2 NE-10.
Lehr ripped down a career-best 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the year, in addition to filling the box score with four assists, which matched her personal best, two steals and a block. Lehr shot 8-for-15 from the field and 1-for-2 at the line. Jones matched her career high in points on 6 of 7 shooting from the field and 5 of 8 shooting at the stripe to go along with eight boards and three assists. Andrews, who netted seven of Saint Anselm's nine points in the extra session, tallied three assists, two steals and a pair of rebounds, while shooting 6-for-18 from the field, including 1-for-3 from long distance, and 3-for-4 at the line.
Jamie Insel led Assumption with 19 points and 17 rebounds.
Saint Anselm trailed 50-44 with 6:53 left when a 7-0 run – with five points from Lehr – transformed the six-point deficit into a one-point lead with 5:33 to play. Shannon Ray stopped the bleeding for the Greyhounds with a huge 3-pointer, but Lehr again answered with a basket that tied it at 53 with 3:12 on the clock.
After an Insel layup put Assumption back up by one, senior Meg Morrissey (So. Kingstown, R.I.) hit one of two at the line before hoops from Jones and Lehr put the Hawks in front by a score of 58-55 with 50 seconds to go. A Tafanie Roye jumper 14 seconds later brought the Greyhounds within one before Jones was fouled and sent to the line where she made one of two to nudge the lead to 59-57 with five seconds remaining.
Assumption still had a bit left in the tank, however, as Kelly Conley was fouled with no time on the clock and calmly drilled both free throws to even the score at 59-59 and force overtime.
Roye would finally open up the overtime scoring with a jumper 1:16 in, but Andrews answered with a layup to keep it tied with 2:36 left. A Ray free throw and Conley layup put Assumption in the driver's seat at 64-61 with 1:18 left. Even after Jones answered with a layup of her own, Conley sank one of two at the line to keep a small cushion for the Greyhounds at 65-63 with 51 seconds on the clock.
That cushion disintegrated on the next trip down the floor as Andrews buried a 3 to give Saint Anselm a 66-65 edge with 24 ticks left. The Hawks then came up with a huge defensive stop on the other end as senior Ashley Viselli (Groveland, Mass.) rejected Conley's layup try and Andrews grabbed the rebound. She was fouled and sent to the line where she hit both to bump the lead to 68-65 with five seconds left. Insel's 3-pointer at the buzzer was no good and the visitors grabbed their first win at Assumption in nearly 12 years.
Morrissey scored seven points (2-10 FG; 2-3 3-FG; 1-2 FT), while collecting a career-high eight rebounds, handing out three assists and recording a pair of steals. Viselli chipped in with 3 points (1-1 FG; 1-1 3-FG), three rebounds, an assist, a steal and that big block.
A three-point play from Jones opened the contest's scoring just under two minutes in and sparked a 6-0 run to start the game and set the tone for the Hawks. A Lehr jumper later in the half gave Saint Anselm its largest lead of the game at 12-4 with 11:41 to go.
The guests still led by the same margin, 28-20, with 3:12 left when a 7-0 spurt brought Assumption within one just over a minute later. A monster trey from Morrissey stopped the bleeding, but a pair of Conley baskets tied the game at 31 as the teams headed to halftime.
Assumption finally grabbed its first lead of the afternoon on a pair of Roye free throws that opened up the second-half scoring, but a 3 from senior Briana Jones (White Plains, N.Y.) and a Lehr layup gave the Hawks their lead back at 36-33 nearly two-and-a-half minutes in. The Greyhounds responded with a 9-1 run, however, and took a 44-39 lead with 9:21 to go. Assumption earned its largest lead of the game at 47-41 with 8:24 on the clock and still led by six, 50-44, when the Hawks made their push with less than seven minutes remaining.
Briana Jones added eight points (3-12 FG; 1-5 3-FG; 1-2 FT), four boards and three assists for the Hawks.
Assumption held a narrow edge in shooting, 37.9 percent (25-66) to 36.6 percent (26-71), while Saint Anselm owned the advantage from downtown, 33.3 percent (5-15) to 18.8 percent (3-16). The Hawks marginally outrebounded the Greyhounds (48-46) and won the turnover battle (17/19), while Assumption controlled the paint (38-26).
The Hawks return to action Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 5:30 p.m. when they play host to Merrimack College at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
