WORCESTER, Mass. – Despite a game-high 26 points from Candace Andrews, the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team suffered a 62-52 setback to Assumption College on Tuesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Laska Gymnasium in Worcester, Mass.
The Hawks drop to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in the NE10 with the defeat, while Assumption improves to 5-3 and 3-3 in league games. Saint Anselm is back in action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Franklin Pierce University for a 1:30 p.m. matchup with the Ravens.
Assumption was paced by 13 points and nine rebounds by Jo Impellizeri, with Kelly Carey (12 points) and Kiera O'Donnell (11 points, eight rebounds) joining her in double-figures.
Andrews opened the scoring in the game for Saint Anselm with a basket inside, but Assumption scored five-straight points to take a 5-2 lead with 8:14 to play in the first. A 1-for-2 trip at the line from Andrews cut the deficit to 7-5 nearly two minutes later, and a spinning jumper in the lane from Caitlyn Abela put the Hawks in front 9-8 at the 4:34 mark.
Assumption eventually took a 15-10 lead with less than two minutes to play, and Andrews ended a 5-0 run by the Greyhounds with a jumper to make it 15-12. Assumption's Kelly Carey answered with a three-pointer to put the home team on top 18-12, but Kaila Duarte scored on an offensive rebound before the end of the period to make it an 18-14 game.
Allison Stoddard's pull up jumper at the 6:50 mark capped an 8-2 run by the Greyhounds to open the second quarter, forcing a Saint Anselm timeout with Hawks trailing 26-16. Andrews ended the run with a layup inside, but Assumption continued to answer each bucket by the Hawks, taking a 32-21 lead into halftime.
Ali Glennon opened the third quarter with a triple to cut the deficit to 32-24, but Assumption eventually took a 38-26 following a reverse layup by Kelly Carey. The Hawks answered with back-to-back scores from Glennon and Andrews before another Andrews jumper made it a 38-32 game with 5:36 remaining in the third. The Greyhounds responded with a 5-0 spurt to go back up by 11, before Kaila Duarte converted a three-point play to pull back to within 43-35, and Caitlyn Abela hit a pair of free throws to get the Hawks to 43-37.
Clairee Putnam answered an inside score by the Greyhounds with a three from the top of the key to make it a 45-40 game in the final minute of the quarter, but Kiera O'Donnell hit two freebies in the closing seconds to give Assumption a 47-40 lead headed to the final quarter.
Assumption eventually built a 55-44 lead following a pair of free throws from Allison Stoddard at the 4:33 mark of the fourth quarter. Kaila Duarte knocked down a 15-foot jumper, and Alli Glennon connected on a three-pointer a little over a minute later to make it a 55-49 game with 2:52 remaining. Assumption's Carey answered with a three of her own, but Emma Daly knocked down a triple on the next Saint Anselm possession to keep the Hawks within six at 58-52.
The Hawks were forced to foul, and had a chance to get the ball back after a pair of missed free throws, but Assumption corralled the loose rebound leading to a pair of free throws for Teneya McLaughlin that put the Greyhounds back on top by eight. Kelly Carey would add two more freebies in the final 37 seconds to give Assumption the 62-52 victory.
Saint Anselm ended the night shooting 41% (21-of-50) from the floor, 26.7% (4-of-15) from three and 50% (6-of-12) from the free throw line. Assumption only shot 35.3% (18-of-51) from the floor and 25% (6-of-24) from three, but connected on 87% (20-of-23) of their free throw attempts. The Greyhounds also won the rebounding battle, 35-29, and committed only 12 turnovers to 14 for Saint Anselm.
