RINDGE, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team wrapped up the first semester of Northeast-10 Conference action with a 55-46 victory over Franklin Pierce University on Saturday afternoon in Rindge, N.H.
Candace Andrews and Kaila Duarte scored 16 points apiece to lead the Hawks. Andrews added a team-high eight rebounds, seven assists, a steal and a block, while Duarte grabbed seven rebounds and had seven steals. Emma Daly added 10 points off the bench, with Ali Glennon scoring seven points to go with four rebounds.
Franklin Pierce was led by its bench as Mikayla Deguire and Cameryn Wilson scored 12 points apiece off the bench. Sarah Middleton added seven points and five rebounds.
The Hawks fell in an early 4-0 hole to start the game, but responded with a 10-0 run capped off by a pair of Candace Andrews free throws to give Saint Anselm a 10-4 lead with 4:04 to play in the first. The Ravens would cut the deficit to 14-10 with just over a minute remaining and Ali Glennon closed out the quarter with a three-pointer to put the Hawks in front 17-10.
The second period was all Saint Anselm as they outscored the Ravens 22-7 in the quarter to take a commanding 39-17 lead into the break. Emma Daly nailed all three of her three-pointers to net nine points in the quarter, while Candace Andrews scored seven of her own.
Saint Anselm opened the third quarter on a 10-3 run as a layup inside from Kaila Duarte staked the Hawks to their largest lead of the game at 49-20 with 3:56 to play in the period. Franklin Pierce responded by scoring 10-straight points to climb back to 49-30, but Ashley Briggs knocked down a jumper before the final horn sounded to give the Hawks a 51-30 advantage headed into the fourth quarter.
Franklin Pierce continued to hold onto the momentum as the Ravens scored the first three buckets of the stanza to make it a 51-36 game and 7:30 to play. Andrews ended the run with a jumper in the paint and Sara Messler followed suit on the next possession as the Hawks went back on top 55-36. The Ravens answered again with another 6-0 run as a steal and layup from Cameryn Wilson forced a Saint Anselm timeout with the Hawks on top 55-42 and 2:46 remaining.
Another Wilson layup just over a minute and a half later trimmed the Saint Anselm lead to 55-44, and despite a layup from Mikayla Deguire as time expired, the Hawks hung on for the 55-46 victory.
Saint Anselm shot 37.7% (23-of-61) from the field, 18.2% (4-of-22) from three and 71.4% (5-of-7) from the free throw line in the game. Franklin Pierce shot 38.5% (20-of-52) from the floor, 37.5% (3-of-8) from beyond the arc and 75% (3-of-4) from the charity stripe. The Hawks won the rebounding battle 38-31, while committing 13 turnovers to 16 for the home team.
The Hawks finish the semester at 5-4 overall and 3-4 in the NE10, while Franklin Pierce falls to 2-8 and 0-7 in league games. Saint Anselm returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 18 when they travel to Roberts Wesleyan for a 3 p.m. matchup with the Redhawks.
