SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team was downed by a 66-55 margin at the hands of the host Dolphins from Le Moyne College on Saturday at the Ted Grant Court.
Saint Anselm falls to 11-9 overall on the season and to 7-6 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Le Moyne improves to 11-7, winning seven out of its 12 league games to date. The Hawks host Saint Rose this Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
Sophomore Shannon Ryan and freshman Grace Guachione scored 13 points apiece with the former hauling in eight rebounds. Senior Clairee Putnam racked up six assists for the Hawks and she joined senior Ali Glennon with seven points.
Saint Anselm took its first lead of the afternoon with 3:41 to go in the first period as Emma Daly poured home a three-pointer to capture a 9-8 lead for her team. A five-point scoring run by Le Moyne gave them the lead for good, however, as the Dolphins took the lead through the first 10 minutes, 18-12.
The scoring by Le Moyne continued into the second stanza before Daly tallied another trey to shrink the 10 point Dolphins lead to only seven, 22-15. The second Daly triple of the afternoon sparked a 13-2 run of scoring by the Hawks, who led by a 25-24 score with 4:36 to go in the first half.
Le Moyne took the lead for good on the next few offensive plays, scoring 19 of the game's next 20 points and never looking back. The Dolphins punished the Hawks in the second quarter, scoring 10 points off of Hawks miscues.
Down by a game-high 18 with 1:21 left, Saint Anselm scored the final seven points of the game as Le Moyne recorded two turnovers during that span. Both teams shot well under 30% in the second half, but Le Moyne did not see its lead shrink below 10 points throughout the second half of action as the early damage had been done.
The Dolphins were led by 24 points from Nicole Riddick. Joanna Dobrovosky secured a team-leading nine rebounds for the home team.
