MANCHESTER, N.H. – Four members of the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team reached double-digits in point scoring, helping the Hawks to a convincing 89-47 victory over Bloomfield College on Saturday in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
Saint Anselm improves to 2-0 on the young season while Bloomfield drops to 0-2 after Saturday's loss, coupled with a defeat last evening at Southern New Hampshire. The Hawks return to action against Franklin Pierce on Wednesday, Nov. 14 in Rindge, N.H. – the opening tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
Junior Shannon Ryan (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) poured home 18 points and added 15 rebounds, giving her 352 for her career – she is averaging 11.4 rebounds per game across only 31 contests in a Saint Anselm uniform. Sophomore Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) tallied 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, filling the stat sheet for the Hawks.
Steinman, who set a career-high with eight helpers, joined other Hawks who set personal bests in Saturday's affair. Junior Julia Thissell (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored 11 points and picked up six rebounds, both career-high marks, and freshman Stephanie Jankovic (Averill Park, N.Y.) struck for 11 points with the help of three treys in only her second-ever collegiate appearance.
Sophomore Grace Guachione (Pittsfield, Mass.) scored eight points, pulling down a career-best eight caroms, and joined senior Emma Daly (Pearl River, N.Y.) with two made three-point baskets. Freshman Eva Mazur (South Portland, Maine) also scored the first point of her collegiate career via a free throw and sophomore Jen Peel (Mansfield, Mass.) handed out a career-high four assists for Saint Anselm.
Bloomfield opened the game strong, building a three-point lead after a Jonise Ledbetter layup with only 2:56 expired. A 10-point scoring run by Saint Anselm, keyed by back-to-back three's from Daly and Guachione, created an instant seven-point lead, 12-5, in only 2:19 of game play.
After a Guachione three-point basket with 1:52 left in the opening quarter, Saint Anselm scored 12 of the game's next 18 points to reach a double-digit lead, 29-16, with 7:19 left in the first half. The Bears were able to cut the lead to 10 points, 36-26, prior to halftime, but Saint Anselm held the second-quarter edge in rebounds, 15-to-9, to maintain a 10-point edge.
The Hawks put the game out of reach in the second half, coming out of the locker room with a 29-6 scoring run. Saint Anselm ended the game on a 22-9 scoring run, adding insurance down the stretch with strong play by the Hawks reserves. During a 14-0 run near the midpoint of the third quarter, Jankovic made three triples to help her team lead by 40-plus points for the first time.
Caitlin Townes scored 18 of Bloomfield's 47 points. Deja McKenzie and Bobbi Floyd had a team-best six rebounds.
