Women's basketball takes down Assumption, 75-61

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team defeated Assumption College, 75-61, on Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference divisional contest.

The Hawks improve to 4-0 on the young season overall and 2-0 in league play while the Greyhounds fall to 2-2 overall and 1-1 against NE10 opponents.

Junior Shannon Ryan (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) was a rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with a team-best 23 points and nine boards. She sits one point shy of reaching 600 career points at Saint Anselm with 599 points. Sophomore Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) had 21 points along with seven steals and three assists for the Hawks while junior Sara Messler (Durham, N.H.) had 10 points and three rebounds.

The game opened with the teams trading points back and forth before being tied at six with 3:52 gone in the opening period. The Hawks then went ahead 9-6 on a layup by Ryan before she completed the three-point play at the charity stripe with 5:59 left to play. The Hawks were up by five points with just under five minutes to play. However, the Greyhounds closed out the first quarter with a 10-0 run to take an 18-13 lead.

After the home team nailed long-range shot to open the second quarter, the Hawks cut the lead to 23-21 with 7:35 left to play on a five-point swing by Steinman, concluding with a three-point shot. The sophomore tied the game at 23 after she knocked down a pair of free-throws with 7:05 left in the first half. Assumption went up by three on two separate occasions but three-pointers by Steinman and senior Ashley Briggs (Scarborough, Maine) tied the game at 26 and 29, respectively. the Hawks closed out the half with a 6-2 run and a 35-31 lead.

Saint Anselm opened the second half with a 9-3 run in the first three and a half minutes to lead 44-34. The teams combined for just three with just under four minutes to play in the quarter with the Hawks up 45-36. Both squads traded points but Saint Anselm maintained an eight-point advantage with 1:06 remaining in the quarter. Assumption had a pair of layups in the final minute to close the gap to 51-47 heading into the final quarter.

After Assumption cut the lead to 55-53 to start the fourth quarter, The Hawks began to pull away building a 61-55 edge with 5:02 remaining.  Saint Anselm limited the Greyhounds to just six points the rest of the way. The Hawks went ahead 67-59 with 2:57 left thanks to layups by Ryan and Messler, while closing the game with eight made free-throws for the 75-61 final.

The Hawks had 38 points in the paint and 12 second-chance points. They shot 47.2% (25-for-53) from the field while holding the Greyhounds to a 41.1% field-goal percentage.

Saint Anselm returns to action against Stonehill College on Tuesday, Nov. 20, hosting the Skyhawks at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
