MANSFIELD, Mass. – Junior Shannon Ryan (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) of the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team was selected as the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday.
Ryan and the Hawks are off to a 4-0 overall record that includes back-to-back victories last week against Franklin Pierce and Assumption. Saint Anselm will look to extend its winning streak during Tuesday's contest at home against Stonehill at 5:30 p.m.
In Tuesday's 62-33 victory at Franklin Pierce, Ryan pulled down 13 rebounds and scored 12 points while serving as a key cog in a defense that limited Franklin Pierce to under 20% shooting from the floor. That figure was the lowest field goal percentage allowed by a Hawks women's basketball team since the 2002-03 season.
In Saturday's 75-61 win over Assumption on the road, Ryan poured home 23 points and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Against the Greyhounds, she was 10-for-15 from the floor and scored nine of her 23 points in the opening 10 minutes alone.
Through her first four contests of the season, Ryan ranks second in NCAA Division II in total rebounds (57) and third in defensive rebounds per game (11.0). She also ranks fourth in double-doubles (3) and rebounds per game (14.3). She is averaging 16.8 points per game to date, the seventh-best mark in the conference.
Across a 33-game career on the Hilltop, Ryan is averaging 18.2 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. Last season, she became only the second Saint Anselm student-athlete to ever reach 500 points and 300 rebounds in a season (Two-time All-America selection Rachel Jackson, 1984-85) and earned D2CCA All-East Region and First Team All-Conference honors.
