BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Senior Shannon Ryan (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) of the nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College women's basketball team matched a career-high mark with 31 points as her team logged an 89-60 victory over Bloomfield College on Saturday.
The Hawks, ranked ninth (D2SIDA) and 10th (WBCA) in NCAA Division II, move to 1-0 on the year. Bloomfield drops to 0-1 with the result. The teams are competing in the 2019 Bridgeport Crossover Classic, hosted by the University of Bridgeport.
Ryan scored 31 points, matching a career-high mark, while also tying her personal best mark with 15 field goals made. She also pulled down 11 rebounds for her 39th career double-double. Junior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) and senior Sara Messler (Durham, N.H.) each logged 15 points with the former reeling in seven rebounds.
Junior Grace Guachione (Pittsfield, Mass.) had four steals, leading student-athletes from both teams, with Steinman topping both teams with six assists. The Hawks finished with statistical edges in field goals made (39-to-23), assists (20-to-11), steals (11-to-4) and blocks (3-to-1).
Saint Anselm opened the game on an 8-0 run with balanced scoring keying the strong start. After a Bloomfield layup with 3:42 to go in the first quarter, the Hawks fired off the game's next 13 points to capture a 29-11 advantage with 7:19 to go in the first half.
Bloomfield cut the lead to 10 points early in the third quarter, but Saint Anselm responded with 12 consecutive points to recreate a sizeable lead of 58-36 with 3:13 left in the stanza. The Hawks grew their game-high lead to 34 points with 1:50 to go in regulation time.
Saint Anselm will battle the host Purple Knights from the University of Bridgeport on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m.
