FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 4/6 Saint Anselm women's basketball team suffered its first setback of the 2019-20 season on Wednesday, falling 91-86 to Washburn College in the opening game of the Cruzin' Classic at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Broward County Convention Center.
The Hawks drop to 7-1 on the year while the Ichabods improve to 5-4 in the 2019-20 campaign.
Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) poured in a team-high 34 points and added 10 rebounds while Shannon Ryan (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) continued her streak of eight straight double-doubles to start the season, scoring 26 and collecting 20 rebounds, in the losing effort for the Hawks.
Grace Guachione (Pittsfield, Mass.), who along with Steinman played all 40 minutes, added 12 points and four assists in the loss.
Trailing by 13 with 3:16 to go in the game, the Hawks went on a 12-2 run over the next 2:20 to pull within three, 82-79, following a Jen Peel (Mansfield, Mass.) layup.
Despite the Hawks rally, the Ichabods converted on nine of their 10 free-throw attempts down the stretch to keep Saint Anselm at bay, pulling away for the five-point victory.
Leading by just one, 20-19, after the first quarter, the Ichabods outscored the Hawks 24-18 in the second to take a 44-37 edge into the halftime break.
In the third, the Ichabods pulled away, outscoring the Hawks 23-13, to take an 18-point advantage into the final quarter.
Heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation, Steinman scored 14 of her team-high 34 in an effort to spark the rally from down-19, as the Hawks would pull within three twice in the final minute.
Five Washburn players scored in double figures on the afternoon, led by Reagan Phelan's 25.
The Hawks return to action on Thursday, Dec. 19 with a 3:30 p.m. contest against Fort Hays State at the Broward County Convention Center.
