Waterville, Maine (December 3)-The Saint Anselm women's ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Colby College Wednesday night at Alfond Rink in non-conference action. The tie makes the Hawks 5-2-1 on the campaign.
The Hawks, who had travel issues and caused the game to start over an hour late, hit the scoreboard first when Cierra Romaldo (Chuluota, Fla.) took a pass from Kristen Byrne (Duxbury, Mass.) and Sam Rowe (Chelmsford, Mass.) to put Saint Anselm up 1-0 with less than three minutes left in the first period.
The Mules fought back in the second period as senior co-captain Colette Finley (St. Paul, Minn.) tallied the equalizer off assists from Marissa Simmons (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) and co-captain Heather Nickerson (Falmouth, Mass.) less than half way through the stanza.
Colby took the lead in the third period, while on a 5-on-3 power play, when Stephanie Scarpato (Osterville, Mass.) notched her team-best third goal of the season from Finley to put the Mules up 2-1.
Less than six minutes later, the Hawks netted their own power play goal as Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) nodded the game at two off a pass from Molly Corl (Danvers, Mass.) for the tie.
Lacey Brown (Freeport, Maine) made 25 saves on 27 shots for the Mules, while Carley Berry (Danvers, Mass.) stopped 29 out of 31 shots in goal for the Hawks in the tie.
The Hawks return to action Friday, December 5th, as they will host New England College in the last home game before the Christmas break. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
