Herron Scores Twice In 3-1 Saint Anselm Victory

, N.H. – Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.) scored twice to lift the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team to a 3-1 victory over the Valiants of Manhattanville College Saturday afternoon at the Thomas F. Sullivan Arena.  With the victory, the Hawks improve to 2-0 overall while collecting their first ECAC Women's East victory.  The loss drops Manhattanville to 1-3 overall and 1-1 within ECAC play.

Herron's game-winning goal came 11 minutes into the second period, as she forced home the puck into the wide-open net for the tally.  An aggressive fore-check by Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) forced a turnover in the offensive zone.  Gathering the puck in the left face-off circle, Picarello whipped the puck around to Herron un-opposed near the right post for the game-winning tally.

Molly Corl (Georgetown, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season at 12:49 of the first period to open the scoring on the afternoon.  With both teams skating 4-on-4, Corl collected the puck in the defensive zone and skated up the left side of the ice.  Moving in on net, Corl flipped a puck on net with a backhand shot, twisting Valiants goaltender Emy Cote out of position.  The puck trickled past the frozen goaltender for the first goal of the contest.

Herron added an empty net goal with only three seconds remaining in the contest.  Following heavy offensive pressure by Manhattanville, Herron intercepted the puck near the Saint Anselm blueline and wristed the puck down the ice and into the vacated net for the third goal of the game by the Hawks.

Haleigh Hutchinson scored her first goal of the season for Manhattanville at 5:05 of the second period to halve the Saint Anselm advantage.  The Valiants dumped the puck behind the net where it deflected off of a Hawks defender behind the Saint Anselm cage.  The puck spilled directly out to Hutchinson on the doorstep where she wristed the puck past Hawks goaltender Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) for the score.

Zappen (2-0) collected her second victory of the season, stopping 21-of-22 shots on goal.  Cote (1-2) collected the loss, her second of the season, after halting 26-of-28 shots on goal.

The Hawks were 0-7 on the power play, firing nine shots on goal during their seven opportunities.  Manhattanville was 0-5 with the extra skater, placing 10 shots on net during their five chances.

Tiffany Herron rides a two-game goal scoring streak, potting three goals in two games (3-0=3)…The Hawks have had a player score two goals for the fifth-straight contest dating back to Feb. 19, 2011 when Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) scored four times and Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) scored twice against Castleton in a 10-0 victory…The Hawks have now outshot their opponent in seven straight games.

The Hawks return to action Sunday, Nov. 6 as they host Nichols College in a 2:00 p.m. contest at Sullivan Arena.
